Today marks one year since Cain had his last heart surgery.  It was hard not to be emotional at times throughout the day.  One year ago today Cain's heart was stopped, put on bypass, and then restarted.  That is something that is still hard for me to wrap my head around.  It is crazy to think that this was Cain one year ago.

It has been a fabulous year but that doesn't make it any easier to look at that picture of Cain.  It breaks my heart to think of all he has been through.  But we have been so blessed and I am beyond thankful!

To celebrate Cain's one year Fontan anniversary I took him to a toy store near our house that is a kids paradise.  They have trains galore which is still Cain's favorite!  He is still obsessed with Thomas the Train so he had a blast in the toy store playing with all the trains.

Cain ended up picking out a Harold the Helicopter as his gift and of course Callie needed a gift too so she got her first pair of pink glitter dress up shoes.

We are always asked "Will Cain have anymore surgeries?" "Is his heart fixed now?"  As of right now we know Cain will have another procedure sometime next year.  Most likely next spring.  It will not be an open heart surgery.  It will be a procedure that can be done through a heart catheterization.  During his last surgery a hole was left in his heart to allow his body to adjust to the new circulation.  This hole (fenestration) is what will be closed some time next spring.

We are so proud of Cain and of how far he has come this year.  I also know we aren't the only people that are proud of him.  He has touched the hearts of so many people!

That's funny...

This morning was Cain's speech therapy day. He has been in speech therapy for over a year now. We used to go every week but thankfully now we only go every other Tuesday. I'll have to write a post about speech therapy one day soon.

After speech therapy, we headed over to Amani's (our neighbor's niece) school to join her for her end of 4th grade picnic.

I'm so glad she invited us! Cain and Callie had so much fun. The picnic took place outside on the playground so after we had lunch Cain and Callie were able to play on the slides.

After lunch we were invited to go to Amani's classroom to watch a video montage of her 4th grade school year. Cain sat in her lap with all the other 4th graders to watch the video. The video showed pictures of the students throughout the year and all the students would crack up laughing as they saw each picture. Cain LOVED this and started hysterically laughing with the 4th graders. It was adorable!

We came straight home afterwards and the kids went straight to sleep for long naps. When Cain woke up from his nap I heard him laughing in his crib and after each laugh he would say "that's funny!" Later I found out that when he was laughing at school Amani would say, "is that funny?" and Cain would reply with "that's funny". I thought it was sweet that he had so much fun at today that it ended up being the first thing he thought of after his nap!

We had a great weekend! It started out with a date night Friday night. Date nights are few and far between so it was great to get out with Brad and enjoy dinner with some friends. What made it even better was our awesome friend and her kids kept Cain and Callie so we came home from our date and didn't have to pay a sitter! Actually this was the sight we saw when we came home.  Poor Mary was trying to watch TV while her kids were sacked out on top of her.  So funny!  Thanks again, Mary, for keeping our kids so we could go out on a date.

Saturday we took our boat to be worked on in Lebanon, TN and decided to stop by a outlet mall in the area. There wasn't much at the mall but Cain was thrilled to find little rides in the food court and slides outside.

Today we stayed home and played outside all day. Brad spent the day working in the yard and making our flower beds pretty while I played with the kids in the baby pool their Daddy bought them. Callie was able to wear her adorable bumble bee swimsuit we found at a Gymboree outlet yesterday which turned out to be so stinkin' cute on her!

End of school

Yesterday was Cain's last day of Mother's Day Out for the fall/spring semester. I am so glad we decided to sign him up for Mother's Day Out last August. I remember being so nervous about him going even though he was only signed up to go two days a week for just a few hours. Cain is in weekly speech so our hope had been that MDO would really help his communication. Thankfully it turned out to be a wonderful decision. Just in the last month or two I feel Cain has come a long way in his speech and his teachers started really noticing him wanting to socialize and play with his peers more.

Since yesterday was the last day of school, his class (and a few other classes) had a big end of the year party at the park. Both Cain and Callie had a blast. Callie wanted to follow Cain around everywhere and do everything he was doing.

A funny story with the flowers is I had bought these potted plants for Cain's teachers as an appreciation gift and attached a note that said "Thanks for helping me grow! Love, Cain".  I had them ready to go and sitting at the back door the night before giving them to Cain's teachers.  I was visiting with my neighbor and we realized all of a sudden we had not heard or seen Callie in a minute or two.  Well, she was sitting at the potted plants picking all the flowers off the plant.  Thankfully we got to her before she picked all the flowers off this one.
