10 Months

I can not believe Cain is now in the double digits!! Cain turned 10 months old today. It’s seriously so hard to believe! This has honestly been the best 10 months of our lives.

What is Cain doing at 10 months?

-The most important milestone that has happened this month….Cain can now say MOMMA!!! We are working hard to get him to say Daddy but when I say Dada to him he says Momma. I think I’ve heard a Dada a time or two though.
-At Cain’s last weight check he weighed 19lbs 12oz.
-Cain is now drinking approximately 28oz. of formula each day.
-We have finally let Cain try a few bites of table food (bananas, sweet potatoes and dressing) Oh and we gave him a tiny bite of a donut this morning for his 10 month birthday. I think he really enjoyed it.
-On October 31st Cain rolled from his back to his stomach for the first time. It was a very exciting moment for us! He is now a rolling machine and can roll to get to his toys.
-He is a wiggle worm. I miss our snuggle time but it thrills me that he is so mobile now.
-He just learned how to wave bye-bye and seems to enjoy waving his hands at each other.
-Cain can now stand with our support.
-He has been trying to hold his on bottle. He can hold it very well but still needs a little bit of my assistance when trying to drink it.
-On Thanksgiving Day Cain learned how to low belly crawl (I think that is what it is called). He will lie on his stomach and use his arms and feet and work SO HARD to push his way very slowly to a toy in front of him. His strength and willpower amazes us everyday.
-We also watched Cain try to pull up on a toy on Thanksgiving Day. Just watching him try to do this made us so happy.
-Cain is such a happy easy going baby. He rarely cries and he always seems very content. I am very thankful for his laid back personality. I’ve been told before that heart babies seem to have easy going laid back personalities and so far this seems to be very true.

As I mentioned Cain is a wiggle worm and rarely stays still (unless he's in his carseat). It was very hard to get a picture of him this month since he kept rolling around in the chair. This is what most of our pictures looked like....

My baby is getting to be such a big boy!

The Boulevard Bolt 2009

For some crazy reason I decided yesterday that I wanted to run in the Boulevard Bolt which took place this morning. It was a 5 mile race that helps support the homeless community in Nashville. I wanted to help serve meals to the homeless this year but when I called about volunteering I was told they already had all the volunteers they needed. When I heard that The Boulevard Bolt helps the homeless I thought it would be another way for me to help others this Thanksgiving. After all, we have certainly received alot of support this year.

The 3 of us before we left for the race.

Waiting on the race to begin. was cold.

It was a very last minute decision though! I mentioned the race to my dad and Brad yesterday and went and signed the 3 of us up yesterday around 4:00. None of us are runners and I've certainly never run 5 miles. I told Brad I knew I could do it though because I would be running it for Cain. He is what I'm most thankful for this Thanksgiving and if he was able to survive two heart surgeries I knew I could survive a 5 mile run. I actually finished the race in 55 minutes and 42 seconds. I felt that was not too bad for my first race. Of course Brad got out there and showed us all out by running it in 45 minutes. And I was very proud of my dad who finished the race in 1 hour and 23 minutes!

This picture cracks me up! I told Brad I wasn't going to put it in the post but he told me I had to since I made him wake up and run 5 miles on Thanksgiving. This was when I was about to cross the finish line. Brad called out my name and I was in the process of raising my arms in the air when he snapped a photo.

My dad coming in to finish the race!! Way to go Dad!

Who knows...maybe this will be a new tradition for our family. I loved it!! And loved that my dad and Brad agreed to participate with me even though they thought I was crazy.

We did it!!

I'm proud we finished the race but I'll be honest with you...I can barely walk tonight. My legs are so sore. But my belly is full from all the Thanksgiving turkey I had later in the day.

9 Month Check Up

Cain had his 9 Month check up this week. The appointment went really well and his pediatrician was really pleased with Cain’s growth and accomplishments.

The following were Cain’s stats…

Height: 28 inches (28th percentile)
Weight: 19 lb 12 oz (27th percentile)
Head Circumference: 17.80 inches (38th percentile)
Body Mass Index for Age: 59th percentile

During this appointment Cain received the second dose of his H1N1 vaccine and his monthly Synagis (RSV) shot.

This picture cracks me up because this is what Cain does all the time now with his nose. It makes me laugh every time he does it.

Dr. Long was very happy that Cain continues to make progress with his weekly physical therapy. He was pleased with his overall motor skills but decided to go ahead and contact Vanderbilt's Pediatric Rehab. He said it can sometimes take several months to get an appointment with this group so he wanted us to go ahead and get on a waiting list. Dr. Long said even though he was VERY proud of Cain's progress he would like this group to do a more thorough evaluation of his gross motor skills and let them determine if he needs more specialized physical therapy other than the therapy he is currently receiving through Tennessee Early Intervention Services.

"Hey...who's that cute baby?"

"Look at my big muscles"

Work Thanksgiving Party

One of the many things I have to be thankful for this year at Thanksgiving is my job and all of my wonderful coworkers.  I can not tell you how thankful I am that the Dispensary of Hope has allowed me to work as a contract employee after Cain’s birth.  I am still working about 10 hours per week mostly from home and also going into our office for weekly meetings.  The best part is they allow me to bring Cain in to those meetings.  In the beginning I felt strange bringing Cain to our meetings but now I think my coworkers would be sad if I didn’t have him with me.  It’s just a guess…but I think they enjoy getting to play with a baby each week.

My office had our annual Thanksgiving lunch on Friday so of course Cain and I had to join in the festivities.  November 20, 2009 001 photo

My coworker Dan had one of his little boys and their newest addition to their family at the party.  We all enjoyed meeting Marshall.

As you can see, Cain enjoyed meeting her too!

Wonderful friends!

These 2 WONDERFUL friends...

And this WONDERFUL friend...

And this WONDERFUL friend...

all worked together to give me a HUGE surprise!!

Saturday morning Brad handed me our phone and told me to listen. I had no idea what he was talking about and what I was supposed to be listening for and most of all wondered why in the world Brad was filming me with our video recorder.

I had no idea who was on the phone and finally realized it was 4 of my close girlfriends; Dawn, Felicity, Stephanie, and Kristy. My first thought was that they were all here in else could they all be on the phone at the same time? That wasn't the surprise though (although that would have been fun). Instead, the surprise was that they are taking me to Miami next April for a girls trip!!!!! I was speechless...which doesn't happen too often. They told me since we have been through so much this year they wanted to do something really special for me and had decided on a vacation to Miami.

They had been in touch with Brad so he knew of my surprise. They also asked him to tape my reaction since they couldn't be with me when they surprised me. How sweet!!

Talk about some WONDERFUL friends. I love each of them dearly and can't wait for our girls trip in April. I know I will miss Cain like crazy but it will be fun for Brad and Cain to have a Daddy/Son weekend. And even more fun for me to have a GIRLS weekend!!!!!

Just a swinging

Just look at this face!

I think it's safe to say that Cain enjoyed his first time in a swing.

It was a beautiful day so we had a picnic in the park with Allison and Liza while the dads went to the Titans game. And yes, I was the overly precautious mom that used the grocery cart seat cover in the swing. This family is without a doubt germaphobe's now! We can never be too safe with Cain.

We had a great afternoon and I can't wait to take Cain back to the park soon.

A little of this...and a little of that...

Sorry for the lack of blogs this week. I have a feeling the grandparents are anxious to see pictures of Cain. I guess I just took a little blog break for a few days.

Cain had no doctors appointments or physical therapy this week so I tried to make use of our time and get alot of work done and get the house cleaned. Brad's been out of town this week and we've missed him a bunch. It will be nice to have him back home tonight. I'm sure he's ready to see his little buddy. Along with work and cleaning, I've been able to visit with friends this week which was nice. Last night I went to a support group meeting for heart parents. I've been to one other meeting and it was good to see the other heart moms again. I really look forward to becoming more involved in this group and I'm very happy that we have a support group here in Nashville. Last night we had a Cardiologist who takes care of adult congenital heart patients speak to us. We learned a lot and I think my biggest "take away" from the meeting was as Cain grows up I need to promote independence such as let him be the one to talk to the cardiologists, let him refill medications, let him make his own appointments, educate him as much as I can about his heart defects. All of this will help him as an adult living with CHD. Of course this isn't anything I have to think about anytime soon but it was very interesting information to learn.

No more machines!

A few weeks ago we were able to say “good-bye” to another machine. Cain’s cardiologist needed to write another approval letter for Cain’s pulse oximeter. His nurse called to say that as long as we were comfortable without having it in our home then the cardiologist was comfortable with that too. We rarely used the machine anymore. We were just using it here and there to spot check Cain's oxygen sat's. After talking with Brad we decided we were okay to see it go. It helps that we live less than 100 yards from our pediatrician so if I had any worries I could just run Cain down to the office to use their machine.

The pulse oximeter detected Cain's heart rate and oxygen saturation levels by putting this lead around his toe.

And this was Cain's pulse oximeter. And yes, it does say his sat's were 91!!!! I can't explain how happy it makes us to see Cain sat'ing in the 90's. Before Cain's last surgery his sat's were in the upper 60's lower 70's and now they are in the upper 80's lower 90's. Simply amazing!! I'll never forget the weekend we spent in the hospital with Cain when his sat's were in the 50's. That was such a stressful weekend.

Cain patiently waiting to see what his sat's are running.

"Are you serious mom? Can my sat's really be 92?"

"If so, that makes me one happy baby!"

"Let's get this thing off my toe before the number (oxygen sat's) goes down"

Of course, just a few days after the medical supply company had picked up the pulse oximeter I noticed Cain’s hands were occasionally turning a little blue. This would happen shortly after I fed him his bottle. I called and discussed this with the cardiologist’s nurse and we decided I would keep an eye on it to see if it got any worse. This only happened a day or two and since then his coloring seems to be perfect. Thank goodness!! He had a little runny nose on the days this happened so I’m thinking that had something to do with it. Naturally it worried me a little but everything seems to be fine now so I’m one happy momma!

I tried to take a picture of his little hand up against mine the day we noticed his hands were a little blue. It's really hard to tell the color from this picture. I took the picture with my phone so it's the best I could do.

Little blue hand

And this is a picture I took today to show a perfect colored hand.

Look what I can do....

Cain had his weekly physical therapy today and I had to share what Cain learned today. Cain's therapist decided we would work on teaching Cain to stand. Cain never ceases to amaze me! He actually worked very hard, put weight on his tiny little feet, and stood with very little support from me. I couldn't believe it. I'm always holding him up trying to get him to put weight on his feet but he's never stood as long as he did today. Our therapist had me sit indian style with Cain's feet on the ground and then had me push Cain's little bottom up supporting his legs and waist. As you can see from the pictures it worked!!! Way to go Cain. I think he's going to be standing without my support before we know it.

We walked over to Liza's house to show off his new skill.

Cain's 1st Halloween

We had so much fun celebrating Cain's first Halloween. I hated for night to end because I thought Cain looked so cute in his costume. I just didn't want to have to take it off of him.

We were very excited because we were invited to two very fun parties this weekend. On Friday night we went to our next door neighbors pumpkin carving party. The kids (and adults) that were there had a blast carving pumpkins and my neighbor Katherine and her friend Ann did a wonderful job making the cutest Halloween party food. this not the cutest Halloween food table ideas you've ever seen.

Brad showing Cain the bird.

Ha! Cain decided he really liked the bird and wanted to grab it. Brad kept having to hold him back. He's all boy for sure!

Then Halloween finally arrived and I was able to dress Cain up in his Halloween costume!!! I was SO excited!!!

Here's our little Yoda!!!!!!!! For all you serious Star Wars fans...yes, we realize that Yoda's lightsaber is green but we couldn't find a small green lightsaber. And a little boy dressed as Yoda at the party we went to made sure to point it out to me. Ha!
That afternoon we went to our friends Candis and Patrick's Neighborhood Halloween Party.

Candis (who is pregnant with their 2nd boy), Patrick, and their precious boy Drew. They were great hosts and know how to throw a very fun party.

There was so much for the kids to do at this party. They had face painting.

They had a kids parade so they could show off their costumes.

And the kids had a blast taking turns at the pinata.

Of course, Cain enjoyed watching all the festivities and I bet he can't wait until he is older so he can join in the fun!

May the force be with you.Posted by Picasa

Liza dressed as a pretty flower

Daddy and Cain playing with the lightsaber. I don't know who enjoyed it more...Brad or Cain.

Later that evening Cain watched Liza Trick-or-Treat. She was able to teach him what he will get to do next year.

Getting Cain strapped in to go watch Liza trick-or-treat.
Liza going to knock on her first door. How exciting!
We had a blast and I'm already ready to dress Cain up again next year!
